Aqueduct Casino Bidding to End by August 1st
NEW YORK, NEW YORK --
New York officials announced the winning bidder to develop a casino and gambling complex at Aqueduct will be determined by the first day of August. After years of political squabbling over a potential casino at the New York city horse track, state officials say they can select the best bid over the next month, and prepare to open the new gaming venue by October of 2011.
Six different organizations have applied for the right to operate the casino project. Among those being considered are Penn National gaming, Wynn Resorts, Hard Rock Entertainment, and Delaware North. The companies were requested by the reviewers approved by Governor David Paterson to supply more information.
Administration officials are comparing background checks, financial records of the bidders, and details of the proposals to determine the best one for the state. Included in the bidding applications are details about upfront and recurring payments, construction plans and deadlines, and expected revenue from other sources such as food and beverage sales.
But political turmoil in the New York legislature may delay the process. While the casino project has already received the legislative go-ahead, winning bids must be approved by the governor, state Assembly and state Senate. Currently, the Senate is deadlocked as maverick Democrats have joined Republicans to cause an even split on votes.
“I think the selection in the Senate now is leaving the selection of a franchise holder for the VLTs at Aqueduct in turmoil right now. This could be an indefinite delay depending on how the leadership is decided in the session," said Assemblyman Gary Pretlow.
