Bama Illegal Gambling Task Force About to Become Illegal
MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA --
Alabama Governor Bob Riley's special task force designated to curb illegal gambling is the subject of a bill advancing through the state legislature. If the measure passes, the task force will be more clearly illegal than the gray-area electronic bingo gaming it is raiding.
The proposed law was approved today by the state Senate Judiciary Committee, and moves to the Senate floor. If passed, the bill would forbid the governor to initiate or direct civil or criminal court proceedings or investigations.
Legal authority to supervise all state investigations and matters would rest with the attorney general. Any court or legal activity begun by the task force would be voided.
Current Attorney General Troy King has opposed Riley's gambling raids, saying that county laws sometimes permit the gaming. Further, King has supported passing a state-wide measure creating revenue for Alabama through gambling taxation.
While Riley's spokesman decried the bill as an attempt to protect powerful vested interests, saying the law "would basically end the criminal investigation of some very powerful and politically influential people in this state," the lack of such a law hasn't caused a proper investigation into Riley's ties to Choctaw casinos in Mississippi to begin.
"The events of the past few weeks dictate and clearly point to the fact that a final resolution to electronic bingo's legality will require the people of Alabama to exercise their right to vote on the issue," said state Senator Jimmy Holley.
