Alabama Gambling Task Force Facing Hostile Take-Over
MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA --
In the continuing feud over electronic bingo gambling in Alabama, state Attorney General Troy King announced Monday he would assume command of the unit. King is opposed to the gaming raids on state casinos which the task force has been operarting.
King says he is dismissing Mobile County Attorney General John Tyson as the task force leader, and that he will suspend all raids on gambling venues until the state courts have ruled definitely on whether the bingo games are legal.
King also ordered the heads of the Department of Public Safety and the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board to desist in raiding the bingo hall.
King says his action is necessary, as the formation of the task force and the confrontational nature of the raids has led to a division among Alabama law enforcement, with armed camps in opposition.
“I am not assuming control of these matters because I support gambling,” King said in a statement. “Personally, I strongly oppose it, but the rule of law does not allow me to enforce my opinion."
Tyson, however, says only Governor Bob Riley can remove him from the task force, and asserts he will continue leading raids as task force commander.
“The attorney general’s announcement today amounts to a declaration of war on the rule of law," said Tyson. "He is determined to do whatever it takes to protect the gambling bosses."
