Legal Battles Over Alabama Gambling Continue
MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA --
The Alabama Supreme Court ruled today that state Attorney General Troy King does not have the authority to take command of a gubernatorial task force formed to raid illegal gambling operations. The victory for Governor Bob Riley gives the opponents of electronic bingo a boost, but is only the latest in an ongoing series of legal maneuvers over the state laws concerning casino gambling.
King stated that he would be placing all bingo concerns in the hands of the governor's office after the court verdict. He said the decision was a blow to the powers of his office, but that he would abide by it.
State operators of electronic bingo, which Riley has said is merely thinly disguised slot gaming, prepared for a return of raids by the task force. Riley has sworn a no-tolerance position on gambling within the state of Alabama.
Macon County officials have received an injunction preventing raids in that county, as a judge said the sheriff and district attorney had not requested state aid agasinst such bingo casinos as Victoryland. The governor is appealing the verdict to the state Supreme Court, and Macon County officials say they want the court to rule on the legality of the electronic bingo games.
King had said he is opposed to gambling, but thought the governor was creating controversy and contention where a proper method would be to allow courts to decide what is illegal gambling.
