Electronic Gambling Brings Federal Heat to Alabama
MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA --
Alabama Attorney General Troy King is the subject of an investigation by federal law enforcement. Apparently the grand jury probe into Alabama's top legal officer stems from his inconsistent decisions regarding bingo-style slot machines used for gambling around the state.
King has threatened to close operations using the electronic gaming devices in some locations, while leaving others undisturbed. King's reasoning is that the machines are legal by state law, under a constitutional amendment allowing bingo. But, he believes, county laws make them illegal in some areas.
Governor Bob Riley has pledged to rid Alabama of the gambling machines. Riley created an anti-gambling task force specifically to police the state for the bingo machines. Riley asserts the state statutes make gambling strictly illegal, with no exceptions.
Questions asked of state employees suggest the inquiry relates to improper use of authority by King. Complaints exist of investigations opened by King's office against political opponents.
Gambling advocates and opponents alike wonder as to the favoritism shown King to some gambling venues, while others are quickly prosecuted. Suspicions as to whether powerful backers influenced King's decisions are sure to be investigated.
