Poker Players Flock to Las Vegas for World Series
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA --
The biggest poker tournament in the world began play on its list of events today. The World Series of Poker started around noon at the Rio All-Stars Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, with the first contest a $10,000 buy-in pot-limit Texas Hold 'em tournament.
The next forty-five days will see various events played out, leading up to the Main Event, the no-limit $10,000 buy-in Hold 'em tourney that crowns its winner world champion, and rewards him with millions of dollars.
However, this year, the Main Event will be suspended once the final table is determined. Play will resume in November, so that ESPN coverage can occur on the same day as play, keeping the eventual champion unknown for greater suspense and anticipation.
Last year, Jerry Wang won the title and took home $8.25 million.
As the field has increased dramatically in size the last few years, the chances of a top pro making his way through the field have gotten slimmer, but it is always refreshing to watch the difference in play displayed by the world's best.
It will be intriguing to see if Allen Cunningham breaks through the pack, or if Phil Helmuth can avoid another early first-day exit.
