Poker Players Victims of Both Cops and Robbers
CHARLESTON, WEST VIRGINIA --
Normally, one would expect that if one were robbed at gunpoint, and then called the police for help, the worst of the ordeal would be over once the police arrived. But that wasn't the case in Charleston, West Virginia.
Two armed women robbed six men playing poker in a building behind a bar in November of last year. The robbers made off with over $27,000.
Police eventually caught the pair. One woman, Jacqueline Dennis, was convicted, and sentenced in October to twenty-five years in prison. The other woman has been identified, but has not yet been charged in what authorities term "an ongoing investigation."
But, in the meantime, the county prosecutor has seen fit to charge the victims with illegal gambling.
The players, having already had their lives threatened and their cash stolen, now face fines, and possible jail time of as much as a month if caught gambling again.
The county prosecutor noted that the poker game was a violation of law, and said he couldn't ignore that. Nice of authorities to make sure the victims of violent crime continue to suffer, while the criminals are at large awaiting the gathering of evidence a year later.
