Texas Sees Legalizing Poker as Step to Consumer Protection
DALLAS, TEXAS --
Some Texas lawmakers have realized that legalization of poker may be the best way to rid the game of its shady element and protect citizens who will insist on playing, regardless of the law.
Not only would poker regulation bring the state revenue it desperately needs, but it would lift the game from the warehouses and secret backrooms to which players are forced to skulk, targets for robbery and flim-flam men.
The Texas head of the Poker Players Alliance, Mike Lavigne, says, "Right now, you don't know what kind of game you're walking into. It could be a game with cheating. There could be collusion. There could be guns."
Proponents of a bill to legalize poker gambling in Texas say the measure would allow hinest games, under safe conditions. Meanwhile, players report beatings and forced entry by criminals who knew the police could not be called to halt their violent crime.
Even friendly home games haven't proved safe in Texas. Police raids against illegal gambling have served to increase robberies, as card players feel helpless to call law enforcement which might prosecute them.
Lawmakers may finally be coming round to reason, as the bill is advancing through the legislature and new House Speaker Joe Strauss is seen as a gambling friend due to family horse racing connections.

| The only thing that will pull Galveston out of it's Ike trauma is legalized gambling. It's done in shady back rooms anyway, so lets bring it out in the open and get some tax revenue generated from it -- NOW. Galveston DESPERATELY needs it. |
