Study Finds Poker Falling in Popularity Among Youth
BARCELONA, SPAIN --
A social trends organization has found poker to have fallen in popularity over the past 2 years. According to the organization, the game of poker reached its peak in 2005 worldwide, before seeing steep declines in popularity recently.
The organization cites declines in ratings for televised poker, a reduction in tournament sponsorship and corporate interest, fewer online poker outlets due to the UIGEA consolidation, and an overall disinterest in the game.
"I don't think we'll ever see the game of poker as popular as it was back in 2005 and early 2006", says Jane Collier, the owner of the social trends website.
"Poker is a classic American game with deep traditions in the United States, but younger people these days seem more interested in video games, cell-phones, and television", she added.
Asked why she thought the game of poker was so popular just a few years ago with similar entertainment alternatives, "On the surface, playing poker was the trendy thing to do for many people - that trend has gone away."
The study concluded that poker is here to stay especially among seasoned players, but the explosive growth recently will most likely not be duplicated with these regulatory conditions.
