Palms Casino Fined Over Poker Event Violations
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA --
The Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas was fined $100,000 by regulators for improper conditions during two poker tournaments held at the casino. The Nevada Gaming Control Board said the casino violated terms of its license by allowing third-party operators to host the poker events in 2007.
By holding the poker tournaments on their premises, the Palms used its license to give legitimacy to the two events. But regulators indicated they expect only the party to whom the license is issued to host gaming, and license privileges are not to be extended beyond the specific parties approved when the license is granted.
Gaming board member Randall Sayre released a statement saying he wouldn't permit independent operators to use casino gambling licenses to "legitimize less-than-legitimate types of programs."
The two poker tourneys came under fire when it was learned that disputes over prize money arose after their completion. A tournament held for charity ended with the charity not collecting its winnings from operators for four months, while the other event also did not immediately pay out full prize money.
A Palms spokesman says the resort made sure all prizes were paid in full as soon as it learned of the problems.
