Phil Ivey Grabs His First Ever WPT Victory

By Brian Chan on February 29, 2008  Email it!    Print Version

Play Slots at Rushmore Casino! LOS ANGELES -- Phil Ivey had never won a World Poker Tour event - that is until last night, when Ivey, a man who had the highest number of final table appearances without a victory, pulled through and grabbed the championship at the Commerce Casino LA Poker Classic.  With the win, Ivey took home over $1.5 million dollars and freed the monkey that was super-glued to his back.

After the victory, Ivey had this to say to reporters, "It's an awesome feeling to finally win a World Poker Tour event."

An awesome feeling sure is an understatement when you consider how dominant Ivey was during the final table.  He entered the night as chip leader and continued to grind his way to the finish line.  Spectators at the event were chanting his name as it was clear that it was Phil Ivey's night.

Quinn Do of El Monte, California finished in second and won a cool $900,000. For Do, it was a tough loss, as he came so close to the utlimate prize, yet was unable to come through. After the match, he stood with a group of friends and listened to them provide words of encouragement.

"At least I lost to the top poker player around," Do said. "Phil was playing great all night."

A total of more than 600 players each contributed $10,000 to compete in the contest that lasted 6 days. Of those competitors, 60 placed "in the money" and claimed a portion of the $6.3 million dollar prize pool. In addition to the cash, Ivey also received a $25,000 seat to the Season VI WPT World Championship being held in April, 2008 at Bellagio in Las Vegas.
