Levine Online Poker Bill On Hold in California

By Brian Chan on September 8, 2008  Email it!    Print Version

Play Slots at Rushmore Casino! SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA -- Lloyd Levine's bill seeking to establish legalized online gambling operated and played within the California state boundaries has been put asise until the New Year. With California legislators embroiled in a lengthy budget dispute, the measure was not seen as a priority.

Further, the president of the Poker Voters of America, Jim Tabilio, had asked Levine to slow the bill's progress while opponents could be lobbied to try to smooth passge for the proposed law.

Tabilio authored the bill with Levine, and seeks to remind politicians nationwide that they infringe on poker rights at their own peril. Tabilio indicated that poker players are getting fed up enough to become a significant bloc of one-issue voters, kicking those who pass restrictive laws out of office.

Tabilio has pointed out that the state's budget crisis is a great reason to be behind the regulation of online poker. Hundreds of millions in revenue could be generated for state coffers.

Tabilio and Levine already have a written opinion from the California Legislative Office that a bill dealing strictly within the state borders, concerning both operator and players, would be within the state's rights and not in violation of the UIGEA.

Perhaps California will be the first state to begin a national revolution, freeing poker players and online gamblers everywhere from the chains of federal restraint.
