Interactive Poker Games Draw Bar Crowds
FT. LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA --
Video trivia has been a staple to draw saloon customers for years. More recently, bars have been holding free poker tournaments to bring in new and repeating clientele. Now NTN Buzztime has brought the two together.
The company, which has specialized in interactive trivia at bars and restaurants, has adapted its game to feature another format, supporting Texas Hold'em. Controllers issued to patrons allow them to play poker, starting with an imaginary bankroll and making the same decisions available in live play.
The system handles much like online poker in the free rooms, but with the added camaraderie of live companions. Play is regulated by the software, which shows each player his hand on the individual controller.
Flop, bets by other players, turn, and river all show up on television screens at the location. The computer determines winners, and fictional money can be accumulated under usernames.
In slow times, bots will take seats to compete with real players, Buzztime has equipped the bots with personalities and playing styles, some looser, some tighter.
As the new game overtakes trivia as the preeminent bar preoccupation, some pubs are holding tournaments and competitions. Darts and pool, mover over; there's a new sheriff in town, and he is interactive video poker.
