News Site Gambling 911 Manufactures Controversy
MIAMI, FLORIDA --
Casino and gaming new site Gambling 911 recently reported on the possibility that famed poker player Daniel Negreanu may have recorded racist remarks on his blog. Gambling industry insiders have been angered by the accusation, which is being viewed as a disingenuous attempt by the site to generate readers while skirting libel laws.
Negreanu had commented on labeling in the US, including the use of such terms as Black Entertainment Television and African-American. The poker pro offered his opinion that these terms were exclusive, and did not work to bring people of different ethnic backgrounds together. He said that a person who happens to be black, with parents both from the US, should be known as simply American.
Gambling 911 contributor Thomas Somach took the quotes and used what is being seen as a cynical and unethical approach to creating a story that would draw search engine results and capture new readers,by posing a question as to whether Negreanu is racist.
"It’s a really low class move to try and increase traffic at your site that way, but hey, it really does work,” responded Negreanu in a statement after the article was released.
"I think this article goes too far and is just shameful," says Insidepokerman on the Two plus Two poker forum site.
"I, for one, am staggered that Gambling911 have entirely created a false story and claimed it news," says Josem, tongue in cheek, on the forum. "That's not like them at all."
Poker insiders expressed sadness that Gambling 911, which had just recently gained much credibility with its lawsuit forcing the unsealing of warrants used to seize online poker funds, immediately lost that stature with its yellow journalism.
