Electronic Poker Fuels Heated Lawsuit
NEW JERSEY --
Lightning Gaming today announced in a company press release that it has filed a patent infringement lawsuit with PokerTek. The lawsuit alleges PokerTek is using and selling electronic poker tables that infringe upon Lightning Gaming's patent of the idea.
The lawsuit was filed in the United States District Court in New Jersey. According to Lightning Gaming, the patent involves the general idea of an electronic poker table with a center monitor screen showing multiple community cards and betting information for each player.
PokerTek is accused of copying the idea and using it in their products and services. PokerTek specializes in ePoker tables for indian casinos and cruiseships.
The lawsuit is seeking monetary damages from PokerTek as well as an injunction forbidding the use and sale of all of PokerTek's products throughout the US.
In a statement, president and CEO of Lightning had this to say, "despite the growth and innovation in poker technology, in this circumstance, we cannot allow willful infringement of our intellectual property.
Industry analysts commented earlier today and they expect this lawsuit to be settled well-before this case makes it to a trial. According to legal expert Pat Humphrey, "it doesn't make sense to drag this case out. The money spent on the trial supersedes that of the possible infringement."
As of this afternoon, PokerTek has not commented on the lawsuit publicly and failed to return our calls.
