North Carolina Ex-Sheriff Denies Poker Allegations

Play Slots at Rushmore Casino! CHARLOTTE, NC -- In a story that is beginning to make national headlines, ex-sheriff Bobby Medford testified in US district court this week proclaiming innocence to corruption and a gambling scandal he is accused of supporting.

The former Buncombe County North Carolina sheriff denied in federal court that he took bribes from owners of illegal video poker machines.  Despite his words of innocence, the man had some difficulty explaining cash deposits in his checking account during 5 hours of testimony.

Government witnesses have testified under oath they paid Medford thousands of dollars so they could operate illegal video gambling machines in their establishments.

Demetre Theodossis has testified he gave the ex-Sheriff about $1,000 a month in bribes so illegal video poker machines could be used at his Hot Dog King restaurants.

The former sheriff also denied he had a gambling addiction problem and disputed testimony that he lost $50,000 in 2006 gambling at Harrah's Cherokee Casino.

As you know, in 2006, legislation was passed in North Carolina banning the use of video poker machines state-wide.
