Barney Frank Supports Online Casino Bill at WSOP
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA --
Representative Barney Frank will be a guest of honor this weekend at the World Series of Poker. Sunday, on Independence Day Weekend, Frank will answer questions from reporters at a one o'clock press conference, and will begin the poker tournament by announcing the traditional "shuffle up and deal" pronouncement to start the day's competition.
Frank is supporting his online casino regulation bill, which had been scheduled for hearings this week before Frank's House Financial Services Committee. But the hearing has been postponed until at least September, due to the overwhelming amount of legislation before the committee regarding the economic crisis.
"We'll get it done," Frank has commented on the worries the bill may be shelved by legislative time constraints. Meanwhile, the Poker Players Association had planned a week celebrating poker, with players flying to D.C. to stand behind the Internet gambling bill.
Now the PPA and its poker-playing membership will instead salute Frank as the Congressman most concerned with protecting their freedom, giving him star status at the WSOP.
The tremendous popularity of the poker tournament that forms the WSOP Main Event, and Frank's appearance at the Rio, all carried nation- and world-wide on ESPN all make the online poker and gambling ban look as ridiculous as it is.
