Police Shrug Off Beating of Poker Legend
AMARILLO, TEXAS --
Famed poker idol Amarillo Slim was robbed and beaten badly this week and a police spokesman seemed to imply it was his fault because of his gambling lifestyle. The eighty-year-old man suffered a broken jaw, hand, and thumb and had $8000 in cash stolen, along with a diamond ring valued at $85,000.
Amarillo Police Lieutenant Jim McKenny said of the robbery and ugly thrashing of an old man, "I think it probably has to do with the clientele and people he tends to hang with in the gambling circles."
McKenny's remarks were at best unnecessary and at worst a callous indication that lawmen in Texas don't consider crimes against those of whom they don't approve to be of import. Of course, McKenny as a policeman probably meets many more violent people in a month than most gambling patrons might encounter in a lifetime. Would that excuse violent crimes against him, simply because he had incidentally come into contact with bad people?
Amarillo Slim, whose real name is Thomas Preston, had gone to a field to collect a $3000 debt owed him. He had been told he would be given a four-wheeler as collateral until the debt could be honored, but instead was jumped and sent to the hospital.
Slim was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame in 1992. He won the World Series of Poker in 1972.
