New Aussie Law Restricts Land-Based Casino Betting
VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA --
The state of Victoria in Australia is planning to put 'training wheels' on their video poker machines in order to reduce the losses of helpless gamblers. With new limits imposed, its simply going to take twice as long to lose all your money. Okay, seriously. Victorian Premier (governor-like) John Brumby told Reuters that a new maximum of $5 per bet will take place starting in the future.
Currently, players can bet up to $10 on 1 hand. The new caps will go into effect starting July 1, 2008 for all new machines, and January 1st, 2010 for existing machines.
On top of that, new machines will use special software to allow players to "pre-set" limits on the amount of time or money they spend on the machines. The new high-tech equipment will eventually replace all the machines by January 2010 in Victoria.
The plan is to reduce problem gambling and addictive behaviors in the local casinos. The government already said they will ban ATM machines from casinos in Victoria.
Some have said the best thing to do is remove liquor licenses from these establishments.
"Players begin to lose their inhibitions after a few drinks, especially when those drinks are served up free of charge by waitresses in sexy costumes", said Lee Rockwell, senior editor for Online Casino Sphere.
Studies in the US have shown that less than 1% of people are susceptible to gambling addiction. Of those 1%, most analysts point to alcohol and stress as the source of the addictive behavior.
