Vick's Deviant Gambling Cost Him Liberty And Now Wealth

Play Slots at Rushmore Casino! LEAVENWORTH, KANSAS -- Former Atlanta Falcon quarterback Michael Vick continues to take his lumps for his involvement in bankrolling an illegal gambling operation. Vick filed on Monday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for Chapter 11 protection, listing debts as high as $50 million.

Vick pled guilty last year to being one of the ringleaders of a dogfighting operation; perhaps if he had chosen a less repugnant form of gambling in which to indulge himself, he would not be in the position he is.

Vick is serving a 23-month sentence in the federal penitentiary at Leavenworth, but as harsh as that fact is, he has a multitude of other problems. He has already lost lawsuits to the Royal Bank of Canada and Wachovia Bank to the tune of $2.5 million and $1.08 million, respectively, because the court found his conviction prevented him from honoring the terms of the loans.

His rich sponsorship deals with Nike and others were negated, and he still faces state charges for the crimes.

Even though a court ruled that the Falcons could only take back $3.75 million of his $20 million signing bonus, his other debts have wiped away all that was left of a promising and lucrative career.

Even for the rich and wealthy, gambling and the action involved can present a thrill; but Vick would have served himself much better to choose a more socially acceptable and humanitarian form of wagering. It would be like heaven to him now, were he able to simply write a $400,000 check, a la Charles Barkley, to the Wynn or whomever, rather than lose his lifestyle, his reputation, and his liberty.
