NBA Referee Sentenced Over Gambling Scandal
BROOKLYN, NY --
Former National Basketball Association (NBA) referee Tim Donaghy was sentenced to 15-months behind bars for his role in the pro-basketball gambling scandal that occurred back in 2002.
The disgraced referee was convicted of accepting cash to alter NBA playoff basketball games through dishonest calls and game manipulation strategies. Sports gambling operators paid Mr. Donaghy to ensure certain basketball teams would lose in the NBA playoffs.
Many in the press have questioned the investigators regarding the extent of the referee gambling abuse.
Said one columnist, "You can't sit here and tell me that Tim Donaghy was the only referee in basketball who was accepting cash to alter NBA playoff games".
The FBI concluded their investigation last summer without bringing charges upon any other NBA referees. Still, despite the FBI's statement, Donaghy's lawyers assert additional referees were involved, as well as league front-office personnel.
According to Donaghy, the NBA front-office ordered referees to manipulate games in order to attract higher ticket sales and larger television audiences.
Donaghy could have received up to 33 months in prison for the crimes, but the judge decided to be lenient.
