Texas Internet Cafe Accused of Operating Online Gambling
CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS --
The 777 Internet Cafe Sweepstakes in Corpus Christi was accused this week by Texas law enforcement officers of crossing the line and operating as an online gambling venue. Police raided the gaming location, saying customers were gambling for cash at Internet connections.
Officers arrested a 21-year-old man in charge of the store, Jason Ramirez, and charged him with five counts of illegal gambling and one count of engaging in criminal activity. Six customers inside the business were not arrested at the time, but authorities say they may face criminal charges at a later date.
Computers, hard drives, and over $10,000 in cash were seized by police.
The cafe featured 28 computers. Patrons could fund accounts which controlled time on the machines, and then play at casino games on the computers. Any winnings generated tickets, which were redeemable for cash at the main counter.
Police say they acted after receiving numerous complaints from citizens. They assert the business was making several thousands of dollars daily.
Police spokesmen noted that the Internet cafe model is increasingly becoming the method of choice for gambling operators in Texas, but said that authorities will continue to raid the cafes when they spring up.
