Texas Push to Casino Gambling and Slots Continues
AUSTIN, TEXAS --
Texas has historically been a conservative, anti-gambling state by law, but changing conditions are bringing more and more talk of legalizing slots and casino gambling in the Lone Star State.
A horse racing industry desperate for survival, Native Americans wishing to enjoy the bounties tribes in other states receive, entrepreneurs eager to fill the state's gambling vacuum, and a Gulf Coast devastated by a hurricane all are pushing for expanded gambling laws.
Perhaps the most important segment contains the politicians, whose moral stands against social ills always seem to end where the purse strings begin.
Of legalized gambling coming to legislative consideration, Representative Edmund Kuempel told the Dallas News, "I think it's breaking out that way, simply because of the economy. We'll consider it if we need to provide some additional revenue to the state of Texas – which it looks like we will."
Kuempel is chairman of the House committee dealing with gambling concerns.
Casino proponents have the added cause of trying to resuscitate Galveston after it was decimated by Hurricane Ike. Gambling revenue could aid and speed the recovery there, and help to save the town's historic district.
Even new House Speaker Joe Strauss has strong family connections to gambling and horse racing. Although he has promised to recuse himself in areas concerning the racing industry, his views will still hold much influence.
