Texas Budget Head Says Gambling Revenue Needed
AUSTIN, TEXAS --
State Representative Jim Pitts of Texas, head of the House Appropriations Committee, told listeners at a hearing that gambling may be Texas' best way to settle a budget deficit. Without casinos or slots producing revenue, Texas would face a budget deficit of over $18 billion in the next two-year period.
Republicans in the state have long resisted legalizing any gambling, but Pitts says too much money is leaving for neighboring states and their casinos to allow it to continue.
"If you go across the border to Oklahoma and Louisiana, you're going to see Texas cars, and we need to grab that money," said Pitts.
Pitts cautioned that gaming would not be an immediate cure, but said he believed it could help prepare Texas for the future. He advocated considering both slot machine operation at horse racing tracks and casino licensing.
Pitts said gambling could bring the state revenue of over $1 billion annually.
Pitts spoke after House Speaker Joe Strauss had testified that severe spending cuts were a necessity. While Strauss did not comment on gambling, his family is prominent among horse racing operators in the state.
