Mob-Run Sports Gambling Busted Under NFL Blind Eyes
NEW YORK, NEW YORK --
Queens County authorities acquired indictments against the operators of a multi-million dollar sports gambling ring that included members of an organized crime family. The prosecution may be notable to National Football League officials, who have said repeatedly that legalized sports betting is a threat to game integrity, while denying the existence of any sizable market in illegal sports gambling.
Among the alleged bookmakers is James Rossi, who has been accused of being involved with the Genovese crime family, one of the infamous New York Five Families. Another indictee is a retired New York City police officer, Joseph Sofia, who is thought to have been the group's collector.
The sports betting ring is said by prosecutors to have handled over $13 million in wagers, and more than $400,000 was taken in raids on the group's properties on Long Island.
Still, NFL representatives tell football fans that game results are better left in this shadowy and violent world of illegal sports gambling than trusted to regulated state lotteries.
NFL executives have said there is only a small minority of fans participating in wagering on football. They also oppose Delaware sports gambling because they see it as somehow posing dangers not presented by Las Vegas sports books.
