Congressmen Join Hysteria Against Sports Betting

By Lance Burkhart on July 22, 2009  Email it!    Print Version

Play Slots at Rushmore Casino! WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Three US Representatives came out today in support of two Senators who have asked the US Department of Justice to interfere with Delaware's legally established sports betting program. Representatives Heath Shuler of Tennessee, Spencer Bachus of Alabama, and Gregory Meeks added their voices to those of Senators Orrin Hatch and Jon Kyl in asking Attorney General Eric Holder to find a way around the Congressionally provided exemption Delaware has exercised to allow sports gambling.

The group is notable for its collective dysfunction. Spencer Bachus is the anti-gambling demagogue famous for championing the family unit, even to the point of inventing research and manufacturing facts about gaming, reaching such a level of absurdity that more sober gambling opponents have disowned his statements.

Orrin Hatch is even more a family man than Bachus; so much so that he stated in an interview that he believes in polygamy, and the Bible supports polygamy. Hatch later claimed his recorded statement was misunderstood. His son serves as a Washington lobbyist, but Hatch is puzzled as to why this may be a conflict. Hatch also is known for ties to the pharmaceutical industry, which has contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to a charity tied to Hatch.

Heath Shuler is the failed NFL quarterback ex-teammate Mark Schlereth used as an example of someone with all the physical attributes but not of the mental necessities to play in the NFL. Shuler, although a Democrat, lives in the Washington compound known as The Family, a residence for evangelical Christians in Congress known for such hypocritical members as Chip Pickering, John Ensign, and Mark Sanford. The residents excel at telling others how to live their lives while failing to follow their own haughty standards.

Jon Kyl is one of the original supporters of the UIGEA. His plans to deal with immigrants has been criticized by his own fellow Arizona Republican Senator, John McCain, as lacking compassion and humanity. He is noted for championing the rights of crime victims, while seeming to forget the Fourth and Fifth Amendment rights of the presumption of innocence.

Gregory Meeks is a Representative from New York, notable only for exercising the option to lease a vehicle paid for by the government. This becomes noteworthy only because Mekks' District is among the smallest in the House, public transportation abounds, and a vast majority of legislators refuse the free car lease. Meeks' lease was named the most expensive in Congress.
