Video Poker Gambling Suggested for South Carolina

By Lance Burkhart on November 26, 2008  Email it!    Print Version

Play Slots at Rushmore Casino! CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA -- Like many of the states in the U.S., South Carolina is facing a major budget deficit. And like many others, expanded gambling programs are being examined as a way to lessen the problem.

This week, state Senator Robert Ford suggested legalizing video poker and other forms of gambling might help the state defray the costs of threatened social programs. In particular, Ford pointed out the case of the Charles Webb Center in Charleston, which provides day care for children with special needs, such as autism and mental retardation.

The Webb Center is one of five similar state programs facing closure after the state General Assembly voted an eleven percent budget cut to the Department of Disabilities and Special Needs, costing $21 million. The Webb Center requires $300,000 to run annually, which comes from federal sources and private donations as well as state funding. But without the state money, the center cannot afford to operate.

Ford estimated that new gambling, featuring video poker, could generate as much as $700 million in state revenue.

Opponents of legalized gambling do not have suggestions as to how to replace revenues which gambling creates. It is clear that taxpayers would prefer to have a chance at winning, even if the house edge is against them, than simply shipping their cash off to politicians in the form of taxes.

Look what video lottery has done for the state of WV. In 5 years.....over 1 billion dollars generated for the state, over 17,000 promise scholarships were given out for kids to go to college for FREE, not to mention the surplus of money the state now has from video lottery all while keeping a low profile in doing so.
