Florida Governor Negotiating Casino Gambling Deal with Seminoles
TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA --
Governor Charlie Crist of Florida has begun negotiating what hopefully will be the final version of the state's gambling compact with the Seminole Tribe. Crist starts with a package passed by the state legislature, and will try to reach minor changes in compromising to address tribal concerns over the bill.
The current measure would give the Seminoles exclusive rights to operate slots, with the exception of Broward and Dade counties, and the exclusive right in the state to operate certain table games, including blackjack and baccarat, at a limited number of tribal casinos. The tribe would pay the state a minimum of $150 million annually for the deal.
Crist had already negotiated a similar deal, giving the tribe slots and table games throughout the state and guaranteeing exclusives on the card games, in exchange for $100 million or more. But state lawmakers sued for the right to be included on the compact, and the state Supreme Court agreed Crist had overstepped his powers.
Tribal lawyers say the raise in price, and potential to losing the card game exclusives in the future without avoidance of the deal, need to be addressed before the Seminoles can sign off on the proposition. Still, it is in both sides' advantage to resolve the issue before the end of August, when Crist faces a deadline from the legislature to finish talks.
''The Seminole tribe is pleased that the compact talks are going again and it looks forward to the ultimate resolution of the issue,'' Gary Bitner, a spokesman for the tribe, told the Miami Herald.
