Alabama Governor Missing Point of Gambling Faux Pas
MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA --
Governor Bob Riley of Alabama doesn't understand what the hoopla is about concerning his wager with Florida Governor Charlie Crist on the outcome of the SEC Championship Game. Riley, who has said he will have zero tolerance for gambling in Alabama, won a crate of Florida oranges as payoff for his bet on the Crimson Tide football team over the Florida Gators.
Riley has created a special task force to eradicate gambling in the state. He has ordered the closing of electronic bingo halls, even in counties whose laws apparently permit the devices.
But Riley was happy to place a sports bet with Crist for the second year in a row. Lat year, Riley lost a rack of ribs to Crist on the game.
A Riley spokesman said that "the bet is in good fun and criticism is coming from upset gambling advocates."
Riley is correct on both assumptions. The bet was clearly in good fun, but when told this, Alabama residents didn't seem happy.
"My bingo play is my good fun, but Governor Riley says its illegal," said Auburn resident Dorothy Wilson. "Guess he feels he's above people like me."
"Maybe the tribes don't care about orange betting," stated Mobile truck driver Paul Traylor, referring to persistent rumors that Riley gets campaign funding from Mississippi tribal casinos to keep competition out of Alabama. "All I know is sports bets are illegal everywhere, unlike bingo."
