Online Gambling No Longer Decried in Republican Platform
ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA --
Online gamblers and Internet poker players everywhere are celebrating a special event today, as the Republican Party changed its platform due to a grass-roots uprising by gamblers. The platform had previously included two sentences that denounced the social ills caused by gambling, and vocalized a stance against online casinos in any form.
But Republican voters, stirred by websites like Online Casino Sphere and organizations like the Poker Players Alliance, mobbed the website of the party platform, using new write-in availability to inform the platform committee in no uncertain terms where they stood vis a vis Internet wagering.
The Republican Party saw for the first time the organized will of online gamblers, and it blinked. Not willing to take a chance these disenchanted voters might become one-issue voters and switch to the other side, Republican platform framers struck the offensive language.
Although the party is still a long way from recognizing that legalization and regulation are the best methods for achieving the goals of both sides, a big step was taken in acknowledging that Republican constituents largely favor online betting. With continued pressure applied by the people, hopefully the next breakthrough will not take so long.
