Federal Problem Gambling Bill Introduced in US Congress
WASHINGTON, D.C. --
Three US Congressmen acted yesterday to bring forward a bill seeking to treat problem gambling victims. Jim Moran, Lee Terry, and Frank Wolf co-authored the measure, known as the Comprehensive Problem Gambling Act.
The bill would fund research into the causes of compulsive gambling, its treatment and prevention. Over %71 million would be set aside for universities, non-profit organizations, and state public health divisions to conduct research and treat sufferers from addictive gambling.
"Problem gambling is a serious public health issue that has been overlooked by the federal government for far too long," said Keith Whyte of the National Council on Problem Gambling. "We know that it is both preventable and treatable, and this bill will help ensure that all Americans will have access to these services.”
According to Moran, the bill would "for the first time ever make a responsible federal commitment to research and treatment for problem gamblers."
Moran says the federal government must commit resources to battling problem gambling, as the availability of gaming and casino proliferation inevitably lead to higher numbers of compulsive gamblers.
