Pennsylvania Police Deem Prize Wheel Gambling

By Brian Chan on September 10, 2008  Email it!    Print Version

Play Slots at Rushmore Casino! FAIRFIELD, PENNSYLVANIA -- Pennsylvania continues its attack on all non-state-run gambling, taking even the most innocent of perpetrators to task for even appraoching the line defining gambling. The Blue Ridge Sportsmen's Association, in Fairfield, held an event in April which featured a wheel of fortune, giving prizes away based on the spin of the wheel.

Now, six months later, the state police in charge of liquor control enforcement have cited the group for posessing and operating a gaming device. Although bars, club, and societal groups are allowed to run small games of chance, no device is permitted.

The association will have to plea before an administrative law judge, who can impose fines from $50 to over $5000.

Since legalizing slots at its racinos, Pennsylvania has made investigating possible gambling offenses a top priority for law enforcement. Special funds have been allocated to pay for man-hours and costs of probes involving wagering. Clearly, the state is determined to enforce its monopoly, taking huge tax levies from the racetrack slots and throwing all others in jail.

Perhaps Pennsylvania has so little violent crime that using taxpayer dollars and law enforcement resources to chase penny-ante gaming around the state makes sense.
