Gov't Employees Charge Sex, Online Gambling to Taxpayers
WASHINGTON, D.C. --
A new Government Accountability Office (GAO) audit has found millions of US taxpayer dollars spent on items that violate government spending policies. During a 15-month time-frame, approximately 40% of purchases charged by United States government employees violated protocol.
The credit cards served as personal lines of credit to pay for sex, lavish meals, entertainment, and gambling debts, auditors said. The employees were suppose to use the credit cards to charge government-business related expenses.
Some of the departments named in the probe include the US Postal Service, the Agricultural Department, and the US State Department.
At the U.S. Postal Service, workers spent over $35,000 on Internet gambling and casino sportsbooks. Other ridiculous expenses include an 81-person dinner outing at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse totally over $14,000.
The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) is known as "the investigative arm of Congress" and "the congressional watchdog." GAO supports the Congress in meeting its constitutional responsibilities and helps improve the performance and ensure the accountability of the federal government for the benefit of the American people.
One of the functions performed by GAO is to identify fraudulent use of taxpayer money.
