Internet Gambling Ad Found to Be Over the Line

By Brian Chan on October 8, 2008  Email it!    Print Version

Play Slots at Rushmore Casino! LONDON, ENGLAND -- The Advertising Standards Authority in the United Kingdom has rejected an ad for online gambling which was ruled irresponsible. The ad featured soccer star Eric Cantona, and first ran during the recent EuroCup 2008.

The objectionable lines were "bet to forget" and "click or regret." The authority, which oversees advertising by the gaming industry to ensure that ads stay within prescribed bounds, found these lines to be a summons to gamble as a means of escaping personal problems.

Partouche Betting, the online casino operator advertised in the banned ad, had spent almost $5 million on the campaign. Cantona was dressed like a medieval king, and television and print ads were planned.

Although Partouche claimed the ads were designed to be joking in manner, the ASA found that the material “exploited the susceptibilities of vulnerable people.”

Cantona said in one version, "To bet or not to bet. There is no question."

He also remarked on England falling out of the EuroCup competition, saying, "Who cares?" This was taken as another suggestion that gambling can make problems seem meaningless.

One English soccer fan said, 'If they think a loss at EuroCup will put me in danger of a gambling spree, then English football would have sent me to the poorhouse long ago."
