Online Casino Regulatory Bill Adds Sponsors
WASHINGTON, D.C. --
Barney Frank's bill to regulate and license online casinos continues to pick up support throughout the House of Representatives, as two more Congressmen recently added their sponsorship to the measure. Peter Welch of Vermont and John Larson of Connecticut became the 60th and 61st members to official endorse the Internet gambling act.
Frank's proposal would render the problematic UIGEA moot, and place the power to regulate online gambling with the Treasury. A number of different organizations say Frank's bill would be more effective in combating money laundering and protecting consumers than an online casino ban, which has failed to block play.
Frank also has written a bill asking that the implementation of the UIGEA be delayed for a year, from this December 1st until 2010. In case the bill does not have time to advance, a group of Congressmen led by Frank has appealed to the Treasury asking that the UIGEA implementation be suspended until legislative action can be completed.
Sponsorship does not necessarily indicate how a vote on a bill would go, but does show how Congressmen view the public perception of a bill. The increasingly crowded group aligning behind the Frank bill shows that these Representatives want constituents to identify them as supporting the bill.
This sign of acknowledging the public will to regulate online casinos means that Congress may be feeling pressure from voters to cease efforts to ban Internet gambling. Polls have shown a marked majority in the US believe online gambling should be allowed.
