Ohio Considers Eighteen Age Limit for Casino Gambling
COLUMBUS, OHIO --
The Ohio Lottery Commission will decide Monday the exact rules and regulations for gambling operations in the state, both at race tracks equipped with slots and, potentially, casinos that may be coming, depending on this fall's election. Most of the terms, such as licensing fees, were determined by the legislature, but age limit is still being debated, with it looking increasingly likely that the state will permit eighteen-year-olds to gamble.
Presently, only New York, Rhode Island, and Oklahoma allow legal gambling at eighteen; all other states set the age limit at twenty-one.
Church groups oppose the lower limit, as they oppose the casino bill and have opposed the slots being placed at the race tracks.
But the state age to purchase lottery tickets is eighteen, and it seems likely the regulators will keep the same limit for slots and casino gambling.
" I'm in the National Guard and heading to Afghanistan in three months," says Timothy Gerber of Toledo. "Why would anyone think that it's ok for me to die for my country, but that I'm too young to gamble?"
Other observers pointed out that, as far as courtroom proceedings, eighteen is the legal age to be an adult.
If the lower age is accepted by the Lottery Commission, Ohio expects to draw traffic from neighboring states with a twenty-one age limit, helping boost state revenues.

how many times has Ohio voted DOWN casino gambling? The answer is THREE TIMES. The fact is that Ohio voters do not want casino gambling. I am not affiliated with any group campaigning against this issue... I just think casinos do far more harm than good. |
