New Jersey Residents Demand Legal Sports Betting

By Lance Burkhart on March 17, 2010  Email it!    Print Version

Play Slots at Rushmore Casino! TRENTON, NEW JERSEY -- A new poll by Fairleigh Dickinson University shows that New Jersey voters are heavily in favor of legalizing sports betting. The poll results show that 63 percent of voters are for allowing sports gambling at Atlantic City casinos, with only 32 percent opposed.

“Betting on sports is not an uncommon practice for many New Jerseyans,” says Professor Donald Hoover of Fairleigh Dickinson. “But for the most part, the state doesn’t supervise it, doesn’t tax it and doesn’t take any revenue from it.”

The margin was even higher on the topic of sports betting at state horse tracks, as respondents came down 63 to 30 percent for permitting sports books at tracks. Off-track betting outlets were less certain in their approval, with numbers falling to slight approval, 48 percent for to 43 percent against.

The poll did show significant resistance to Internet sports gambling, as 66 percent were against legalizing sports betting by phone or online.

New Jersey voters cannot create legal sports betting without the aid of Congress or the courts, as currently the federal ban on sports gambling prevents the state from forming its own policy. However, state representatives are pursuing a lawsuit claiming the sports gambling prohibition is discriminatory.

Interesting information. Many people aren't aware of betting exchange, let me explain you about it in simple words. Betting exchanges are emerging as the best sportsbetting sites because they offer better odds than traditional bookmakers and you don't see as much of your betting profit disappearing into the bookie's pockets.
