National Basketball Association Clears Itself of Gambling Problem
NEW YORK, NEW YORK --
After an intense investigation over a year, a former federal prosecutor has released a report confirming the National Basketball Association's greatest hope, that referee Tim Donaghy acted alone in a gambling scandal.
Lawrence Pedowitz said he could find no evidence that any other ref had engaged in illegal activity in his publicly released report. Of course, the NBA desperately wants this gambling problem to disappear, so the report says exactly what the league would have wanted.
Keep an eye out for any sudden resignations of referees for "family or health reasons" in the next few weeks. If Pedowitz did discover further proof of fixing games, any implicated parties might be made to quietly leave the league, avoiding a public uproar.
Pedowitz did find that officials had violated rules against placing bets at casinos, as they were forbidden by the league to enter the gaming area of any casino. The league is dealing with this issue by relaxing the rules, allowing refs to gamble at any race track, off-track betting venue, or casino, as long as sports betting is not involved.
Pedowitz also made recommendations to improve the current system, mostly including rules to increase transparency and allow anonymous tips.
So, officially the league is absolved of creating a lax environment, new rules are created, and the public attention wanders. One wonders what the private report NBA Commissioner David Stern saw had to say?
