NBA Gambling Scandal Questions Remain
NEW YORK, NEW YORK --
Online Casino Sphere has been leery of putting too much trust in the National Basketball Association's self-generated report on internal gambling problems. Lawrence Pedowitz, the league's appointed detective, found no evidence of gambling on basketball by anyone other than referee Tim Donaghy.
Further, Commissioner David Stern has assurred fans that not only did Donaghy act alone, but no outcomes were directly affected by the disgraced official.
But R.J. Bell of pregame.com ran some numbers, and it seems Stern may be being disingenuous about the situation. Bell found that the first fifteen games officiated by Donaghy in 2006 in which the point spread moved by more than a point and a half had the side the money was on win all fifteen.
The odds of such a coincidence occurring naturally are 32,768 to 1.
Scott Foster, the referee that Donaghy phoned multiple times either right before or right after talking to his wagering connections, also had interesting numbers. The first ten games Foster worked in 2006 in which the spread moved two or more points, the money side hit all ten.
The odds against this are over 1000 to 1.
Mr. Stern will need a completely independent investigation with total transparency to rid himself of this lingering gambling scandal. Otherwise, it's no better than trusting AbsolutePoker and UltimateBet when they say the cheating is over.
