Bipartisan Agreement UIGEA Gambling Ban Must Go

By Brian Chan on August 5, 2008  Email it!    Print Version

Play Slots at Rushmore Casino! WASHINGTON, D.C. -- As pressure mounts from private citizens, business leaders, foreign countries, and even executive officials within its own government, the U.S. seems to be reaching a bipartisan acknowledgement that the UIGEA must undergo radical changes that include severely restricting the scope and power of the law.

This past week. Republican Representative Pete Sessions of Texas authored a bill that would forgive any online gambling operators for acts committed before the UIGEA passage in 2006. This amnesty is stated in the bill to be caused by conflicting and outdated federal laws regarding gambling, including those written before any conception of the Internet existed.

The bill also narrowed the range of the UIGEA, asserting the law should be made to only apply to online sports wagering. Sessions noted a special need to protect amateur and pro sports from corrupting influences.

The bill follows the near-approval of the proposal by Barney Frank, a Democrat, and Ron Paul, a Republican, designed to block implementation of the UIGEA, and allow regulation and taxation of the online gaming industry.

Even though an outspoken, if misinformed and deluded, resistance remains firm among Republican ranks, the power of this group to bully opponents and friends alike seems on the wane. Spencer Bachus, one of the leading Congressional speakers against gambling, has been called out by much of the media for his manufacturing and manipulation of the facts.

As evidence increases that all government officials are hearing from citizens that prefer to make decisions rather than have government make choices for them, the days of the UIGEA certainly seem numbered. Sherman Bradley, head gambling analyst at Online Casino Advisory, stated in a phone interview that 'the Congress may not answer the call against the UIGEA rapidly, but answer it they will. There is too much pressure politically and economically to do otherwise."
