Minnesota Republican Says State Online Gambling Move Communist
MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA --
Because conservative Christians are behind much of the effort to ban online casinos, Republicans are presumed to be against Internet gambling. But one Republican state Representative in Minnesota says censoring online gambling from the Internet is an action Communists would support.
Pat Garafolo issued a bill into the state legislature to block the state's order to Internet service providers to bar 200 online gaming sites from residents. Garafolo says the Minnesota Department of Public Safety should have more important business than worrying about some guy playing online poker in his basement.
"I have serious concerns about government banning access to websites. This is the kind of thing they do in communist China, not the United States of America," said Garafolo.
The ISPs have shown no inclination to recognize the state order. In fact, some websites have noted that the letter from the state to the ISPs asserted that copies had been sent to the FCC in case of non-compliance.
But the FCC website says specifically it doesn't have regulatory authority over the Internet. Gaming analysts note the FCC goof and the haphazard and inexplicable decisions on which sites were included on the list, and have concluded the effort was not well thought out.
