March Madness Gamblers Seeking Shelter
ST. LOUIS, MO --
Across the country, March Madness fever is heating up. The NCAA college basketball season grand finale is set to begin tomorrow with teams across the nation competing for the ultimate prize, a national championship.
The NCAA division-I basketball tournament is one of the largest sporting events in the world. Its also one of the largest gambling events in the world. March Madness is the first real wave of betting in Las Vegas sportsbooks after the Superbowl. In addition, office pools across the country will see millions of dollars exchange hands as regular fans place a few bucks on the tournament.
Despite the popularity of betting on March Madness in your office pools, they are actually illegal in many states across the US. Some in law enforcement have said the statutes are outdated and rarely enforced. But, can you really trust that you will not be investigated?
Will local law enforcement barge into your workplace and start arresting people? For answers to these questions, we consulted Brian Turk, a lawyer who specializes in internet gaming laws.
"Well, probably not, but if you plan on betting, be sure to do it anonymously. Another thing, do not send any emails over company wires to discuss betting on the tourney. If you are placing large wagers on the event, be sure to remain quiet about it."
He went on to say 99.9% of those gambling in office pools have nothing to worry about. His main piece of advice, "If you live in the United States, do not place wagers online with offshore sports betting operations."
