US Senator Kyl Damages Country in Spite Against Online Gambling
WASHINGTON, D.C. --
US Senator Jon Kyl of Arizona is leaving the Treasury dangerously understaffed as payback for the delay in implementing the online gambling ban. According to numerous reports, Kyl is preventing the approval of several key staffers at the Treasury Department to display his anger at the decision to push back the effective date for the UIGEA gambling block by six months.
The treasury's move to change the UIGEA date from December 1st of last year to this June 1st came after a sries of pleas by bipartisan Congressmen, who asked that legislative efforts to regulate Internet gaming by Barney Frank be given time. The group included both Democrats and Republicans concerned about the negative effects of the online casino ban.
But Kyl has responded in a huff, blocking important Treasury appointees to protest a decision on which he was heavily outnumbered.
"It is hard to imagine that it does not have a deleterious effect," said Bush-era Treasury staffer Clay Lowery of Kyl's political maneuvering.
While the White House said matters of national security are being handled, it reiterated that a full complement of leadership positions is important to the Department's proper workings. Among the appointees in limbo are undersecretaries of international affairs and international finance.
