Gambling Lobbyists Propose Federal Study

By Lee Rockwell on June 7, 2008  Email it!    Print Version

Play Slots at Rushmore Casino! WASHINGTON, D.C. -- According to reports, the American Gaming Assocation spent nearly 1 million dollars last quarter lobbying on behalf of the casino gambling industry.  This includes both online and offline gaming interests.

The American Gaming Association is a trade group that represents the entire casino industry, from Las Vegas mega-casinos to offshore slots parlors seeking licenses in the US.

The trade organization lobbied on many internet gambling issues, including a proposal that would require a federal study to look at the licensing, regulation, and taxation of online gambling, including another proposal that would license companies that take online wagers.

The AGA, whose members include Bally Technologies Inc. and MGM Mirage, also lobbied on a measure intended to attract more tourists to the U.S., and rules governing the taxation of employee tips.

Besides Congress, the group lobbied the Treasury Department in the first three months of the year, according to a form filed April 18 with the House clerk's office.

The first online gambling site launched in August 1995. It is currently estimated that there are well over 2,000 Internet gambling Web sites offering various wagering options, including sports betting, casino games, lotteries and bingo.
