Illinois Gambling Funds $31 Billion Infrastructure Bill
SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS --
Governor Pat Quinn of Illinois signed a new bill allocating $31 billion in expenditures on infrastructure throughout the state. Most of the funding for the bill is derived from expanded gambling bills passed by the Illinois legislature.
The gaming bills allow placement of slots at state horse tracks, expand casino licensing, and legalize video poker machines. The bills were contested by anti-gambling foes, but Illinois citizens are breathing easier now that the state stands to recreate much of the crumbling public works throughout the state.
Quinn says the projects will bring 439,000 jobs to Illinois, and replace dangerous old systems that otherwise would still be depended on to operate.
Money will go to highway repair throughout the state, new school buildings, parks and bikepath construction. Bridges and university buildings will be erected or redone.
State Senate President John Cullerton saluted the bill as a product of bipartisan cooperation. City officials around the state praised the potential impact on their areas.
Some critics still mumbled about the social costs of increased gambling, but they couldn't be heard over the cheers of the crowd, yelling about the massive investment in Illinois' future.

Mumble? I don't think so - perhaps not being stifled would be a better term. Some opponents are opposed on moral grounds. I'm a liberal Democrat that plays poker with friends that doesn't believe in state run gambling as a funding mechanism for funding government operations. I believe if government needs money, they should ask for a tax increase not steal it out of the pockets of the saps that throw money away on video poker.
I know you will not agree, but the time will come when some of the readers will realize being a shill for poker interests is not the best thing in life!
