Ilinois Expands Video Gambling Locations
SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS --
Last Year, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn negotiated a package through the legislature that would fund $31 billion in infrastrucrure improvements by placing video gambling machines at bars and restaurants throughout the state. But after a number of municipalities had opted out of the gaming plan, the state legislature found it necessary this week to expand gambling locations for the video slots to truck stops and veterans' organizations.
With many local governments deciding to ban the gaming machines, the effort to rebuild roads and schools faced not creating the necessary funding. The new bill replaces some of the lost locations for gambling machines with a broader determination of eligibility to host the casino games.
"This is very important piece of legislation to make sure that this operation moves forward so we have the dollars to fund our capital bill," said Representative Lou Lang, who sponsored the new measure.
Opponents said the bill weakened the authority of state gambling regulators. One clause in the measure specifies that the Illinois Gaming Board can only reject an applicant for a gambling license due to a previous illegal gambling charge. legal authorities say many involved in illegal gambling never face formal charges, instead pleaing to lesser crimes or accepting fines.
But Land said the board had many options open to it to restrict gambling when ands where it chose.
The issue was passed 81-26, and asvances to Quinn's office for signature.
