Hawaii Taxes Out-of-State Gambling Winnings
HONOLULU, HAWAII --
Hawaii lawmakers are determined to maintain the state's status as one of two states to have not a single form of legal gambling. But, while legislators bemoan the evils of gambling, they don't have any such repulsion to gambling winnings, and want residents to pay tax on winnings from Las Vegas and elsewhere, while not allowing losses as write-offs.
Despite the insistence by public figures that Hawaiians are massively anti-gambling, residents speak of Las Vegas as if it is an extended part of the state. Apparently, legislators feel that way too.
The state legislature has passed a law requiring all citizens to pay taxes on gaming winnings. The new and exciting part is that losses can no longer be written off against winnings.
This means that, while protesting how gambling can trick honest players into losing money, the state is assuring that exactly that happens. If a player wins some and loses some, Hawaii wants a cut of the winning bets, without allowing for any losing bets.
One Hawaii spokesman said that perhaps the new rules will help people limit how much they bet. Perhaps the state should be less worried about how much its residents bet, and more about why they have to flee the state in numbers to enjoy personal freedom.
