Harrah's Intensifies Online Casino Lobbying Efforts
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA --
Harrah's Entertainment is adding to its roster of lobbyists employed to work US lawmakers so as to pass legislation regulating online casinos. Capitol Counsel joins the Podesta Group and Brownstein Hyatt as registered lobbyists helping Harrah's educate Congressmen on the facts behind the myths about online gambling.
Harrah's has been among the most proactive of the land casino operators, opening Internet casino operations under a new international division. The World Series of Poker brand, owned by Harrah's is considered perhaps the top money maker available if US online casinos receive licensing.
An article by Legal Times asserts that Capitol Counsel filed paperwork to meet legal necessities to represent Harrah's. While neither company would provide comment, it is known that Harrah's other lobbyists are working on rounding up support for Barney Frank's proposal to regulate Internet gambling.
According to the report, Harrah's spent just shy of a million dollars on lobbying of national legislators in the US, in the first quarter of the year.
While some land casino companies still oppose online gambling, many have decided to maximize their position for what is viewed as an inevitable invasion of online casinos. Companies like Harrah's plan to acquire as much of the new market as possible, and their revised stance on Internet gaming has led the American Gaming Association to alter its position to a neutral standing on the issue.
