Governor Patrick Promotes New Casino Plan

By Brian Chan on March 3, 2008  Email it!    Print Version

Play Slots at Rushmore Casino! BOSTON -- A proposal to build 3 new casino destinations in Massachusetts is causing quite a debate. The plan, supported by Democrat Governor Deval Patrick, is designed to help the local economy and generate additional funds for the state.

According to the Governor, the new casinos will create up to 30,000 new jobs state-wide, mainly in the construction industry. He also claims the new casinos will spur additional in-state spending by locals.  It's estimated the residents of the state spend $1.1 billion dollars in neighboring Rhode Island and Connecticut at their casinos.

Patrick would like to keep that money in Massachusetts.

Recently, Patrick has be questioned over the 30,000 jobs he claims will be created. Some have said that is not a realistic figure, however, the governor maintains that "some news jobs is better than none", even if his projections are over-estimated.

If he is able to get legislative support to build these new casinos, it would be a first in Massachusetts. Opposers of the plan say the news jobs will be offset by programs need to handle increased crime, more bankruptcies, and disrupted families.

If the new casinos become a reality, Connecticut casinos like Foxwoods and the Mohegan Sun stand to lose millions.
