Gambling and Cruelty Charges Hit Cockfight Patrons
POOLVILLE, TEXAS --
Texas police raided a barn in sleepy Poolville this weekend and found hundreds of people gambling on illegal cockfighting. Authorities arrested 176 participants, and confiscated 114 roosters at the illegal gambling site.
Charges ranged from misdemeanor fines to felony gambling and animal cruelty against the organizers and operators of the cockfights. A hearing Monday in Weatherford will determine the fate of the roosters.
Humane Society representatives acknowledged many, if not most, of the seized rosters will be put to death. While a few may be claimed or adopted, the vast majority of the animals will be euthanized, an ironic ending after being saved from illegally cruel treatment.
Cockfighting has been a thorny subject in southern and western states, as lawmakers try to end the practice of fighting animals against each other, but struggle to overcome long ethnic traditions behind the activity.
Police had to use busses to haul away those detained at the gambling site. Over half of the cockfight patrons turned out to be illegal immigrants. As many as 15 children were attending the cockfights, and were released to relatives not held by authorities.
